Once upon a time, there was no such shark as Audax – merely a boring individual stuck in the boring Midwest with a boring job. This individual enjoyed reading books, playing video games, and watching anime (as some individuals are wont to do). They weren’t really aware of the furry fandom aside from it being a niche of the anime community, and some of the costumes being pretty cool. A fun contest popped up between this person and their best friend – who could find the most awesome (or was it awful?) Rule 34 image of the main characters from their current favorite anime, and use it to make the other scream and reach for their eye bleach?
One bout of hysterical laughter later, the boring person noticed a banner on the side of the Rule 34 page that had the word “dragon” on it, and clicked the link without thinking about the kind of website they were currently browsing.
I had honestly never thought about dragons “in that way.” Fantasy nerd? Absolutely. Read some slightly uncomfortable things along the years that alluded to dragons needing to procreate? Yep. Wrote a term paper on draconic behavior, complete with MLA-cited sources? Of course. Seriously considered dragon dildos being a thing? Never. That was quite possibly the most awkward 30 seconds of my life. I stared at my laptop screen in stunned silence, closed the browser window, flipped the lid shut, and refused to go anywhere near my computer until my spouse got home from work.
As soon as they got in the door and unwound from their day, I told them I’d accidentally found something of the interesting/weird variety on the internet because of our ongoing Rule 34 gag. I flipped the laptop open, booted the browser up, went to bad-dragon.com, and handed the computer over in expectant silence.
“Huh. Well. That’s interesting. You want one of these?” was not the question I was expecting.
“Yeah. I guess I do,” was not the answer they were expecting.
I enjoy using ridiculous turns of phrases when I’m able to, so let’s just say “one thing led to another” and now I work for Bad Dragon as a forum administrator, marketing team member (I help write smut!), and general shark extraordinaire. A lot things have happened between here and there, but that’s definitely a tale for another day!
For now, this is Shark, signing off!
